Like most incoming freshmen, Erica Mosca (CGS’06, COM’08) had her share of nervous jitters. Fortunately for her, a College of General Studies student advisor helped calm her fears when she came to BU two years ago from sunny California. To return the favor, Mosca became a CGS student advisor last summer.

“I know I had a lot of fears, so I’m glad I am able to help others who have those sort of fears to overcome them,” says Mosca. After a stint as a CGS Dean’s Host during her sophomore year, Mosca applied for a summer position as a CGS student advisor. As part of the deal, she and other student advisors were provided with on-campus housing for the summer and worked as orientation advisors.

During the eight two-day summer orientation sessions, student advisors helped incoming freshmen plan classes, create social networks at BU, and explore the campus and city. “I would just kind of try my best to show that it’s okay, that they don’t have to feel shy,” says Mosca. She used a bright green inner tube emblazoned with her group number to catch the attention of her assigned students and gather them together. “I just liked that I was able to help others assimilate into BU,” she says.

The Office of Orientation and Off Campus Services is holding information sessions for students interested in becoming student advisors, on Tuesday, December 5, and Wednesday, December 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. on the fifth floor of the George Sherman Union.
