Pete MacArthur (SED’08) started things off at TD Banknorth Garden last night nine minutes into the second period, when he snagged a pass from Chris Higgins (CAS’09) and poked the puck past Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen. Just 48 seconds later, Kenny Roche (MET’07) took a breakaway all the way home, putting the Terriers, who have won 10 of the last 12 Beanpot championships, up 2-0.

The Huskies fought back hard, but despite a 5-3 power play that carried over from the second period to the third, the team failed to put the puck in the BU net. In the third period, Terrier Dan McGoff (CAS’08) pounded two more nails in the Huskies’ coffin, and BU left the ice with a 4-0 win and an all-time Beanpot record of 79-30. In three periods of play, Thiessen stopped 33 BU shots and Terrier goalie John Curry (CAS’07) kept 27 shots out of the net to post his second consecutive shutout and sixth overall. The 55-year old Beanpot tournament pits Boston’s four Division I hockey teams against one another in a contest whose greatest reward is citywide bragging rights.

The Terriers and the Huskies had faced off twice this season prior to last night’s battle. BU took a 4-3 decision on October 20, and the teams skated to a scoreless tie on January 6. Since then, both teams have been on a roll. The Terriers, ranked seventh nationally, tallied impressive road wins against the University of Maine and Boston College. The Huskies swept a two-game series against the University of Massachusetts–Lowell and also picked up a road win at Maine.

Last night’s victory sets BU on a collision course with BC, who defeated Harvard, 3-1, in first-round action.

The BU-BC final will be played at TD Banknorth Garden on Monday, February 12, at 8 p.m.
