For Leadership, Union Looks to Yunis

If you happen upon a real live puppy on campus bearing a strong resemblance to BU’s famous mascot, Rhett, in the coming months, don’t be alarmed — it just means that Adil Yunis, the new Student Union president, has implemented one of his plans for boosting Terrier pride.
Cranking up campus spirit is a top priority for Yunis (CAS’08), who succeeded Brooke Feldman (CAS’08, SED’08) in May and will serve until he graduates next spring.
“The best experience during the campaign was making new friends and contacts,” Yunis says. “But the friendships I already had were my strongest asset in the election. I relied on them.”
Born in Montreal, the biology major spent time in Providence, R.I., and Dallas, Tex., before moving to Beirut, Lebanon, at age 10. He says the diversity of BU’s student body lured him back across the pond three years ago.
For Yunis, becoming Student Union president was a long-held ambition. “I remember sitting at Matriculation three years ago, watching Jon Marker (CAS’07) [Student Union president at the time] speak,” he says. “It was such a privilege to be able to share your experiences with so many people. It became my dream to do the same.”
The dream came true when he addressed the Class of 2011 at last week’s Matriculation ceremony.
