Name: Lauren Lane
From: New Orleans, Louisiana
School: College of General Studies
Major: Undecided

What convinced you to come to BU?
I learned about BU from my college counselor and was interested in the communications program. But I knew BU was the place for me as soon as I walked on campus. I loved the architecture of the Bay State Road buildings, which reminded me a lot of the French architecture in New Orleans. And Hillel House will be a great way to keep up with my Jewish heritage. Besides the campus, I fell in love with the city of Boston itself, especially the beautiful parks and the shopping on Newbury Street!

What makes you feel most excited about coming to college?
Leaving the South and heading north is very exciting. Although most of my family is from New York, I’ve never spent a long period of time there or had a real winter, or even a change of seasons. It’s always hot in New Orleans, even during mid-winter. I’m also excited about meeting new people and being able to choose my classes.

What makes you feel most nervous about coming to college?

I’m not really nervous about anything. I lived alone for four months after Hurricane Katrina so I could attend school in New Orleans, so I do not have any separation anxiety. I am a little nervous about being able to budget myself!

What kinds of activities do you want to become involved in?

I’m interested in Japanese culture and animation, so I hope to join some sort of anime club. I also want to rush in the spring and get involved in a sorority.

What is one of the goals of your first year at BU?
I want to get good grades and really enjoy myself. Also, I hope that within my first year at BU I will know which college I want to transfer to after my two years in the College of General Studies. I’m still deciding between Arts and Sciences and the College of Communication.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

This year in Art IV I worked all year on an installation project for my school. It was titled Self-Portrait as a Room and dealt with many themes pertaining to Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of my city. The teachers awarded me the Mary Alice Reiss Jackson Art Award for my hard work and dedication on the project.

What will be your first stop when you start exploring Boston?
I can’t wait to explore Chinatown!

How are you spending your summer vacation?
I’ve been doing a lot of traveling this summer, and I have a summer job so that I will have money to fall back on when I finally go off to college!
