Parker Suspends Four Hockey Players

A tough season gets tougher; reasons for action not disclosed

On the heels of last weekend’s back-to-back defeats by archrival Boston College, the Boston University’s men’s hockey team is facing an even more painful loss: four of its players have been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.

The suspensions, effective immediately, involve captain Brian McGuirk (CAS’08), leading scorer Bryan Ewing (CAS’08), defenseman Dan McGoff (CAS’08), and former Hockey East Rookie of the Year Brandon Yip (CAS’09). Terrier coach Jack Parker (SMG’68, Hon.’97) did not provide any details of the reason for the suspensions. In a press release issued on Thursday, December 6, Parker wrote that he was “disappointed that these four chose to break one of our team rules,” describing the events as “strictly a team matter.”

Pete MacArthur (SED’08) will be acting captain in McGuirk’s absence, and Ryan Weston (SHA’08) and Matt Gilroy (CAS’09) will fill in as assistant captains.

The Terriers enter tonight’s game against UMass-Lowell with a season record of 4-9-2, with a 3-5-1 Hockey East showing. In addition to the four suspended players, the team will be without defensemen Colby Cohen (CAS’11) and Jason Lawrence (CAS’09), who are injured. Ryan Monaghan (CAS’08), Steve Smolinsky (CAS’09), Victor Saponari (SMG’11), and Craig Sanders (SMG’08) are expected to fill in as a result.
