Want a Radio Show?

No matter how obscure the neopop Spanish reggae sound you’re jamming to these days may be, Alicia Zweig wants to hear about it — and give you a place to share your musical taste.

WTBU is sponsoring a New Voices contest, according to Zweig (COM’08), the station’s general manager. Anyone can enter by sending ideas to WTBU programming director Andy Hoglund (COM’08) by November 30. Contestants will be given the opportunity to create a demo tape at the station using WTBU’s equipment. Station managers will select a group of finalists, whose work will be featured on BU Today during the first week of classes in January. The winners will be chosen by popular vote of readers, with the first prize a digital camera. But several shows will win slots in next semester’s WTBU lineup.

Zweig, who started playing her favorite folk tunes on WTBU as a freshman, hopes the contest will bring different musical styles to the station’s schedule and to the BU community. “I think many people listen to an eclectic mix and you can appreciate music beyond the language in the songs,” she says. “We want involvement from all over BU and all over the world.”

“We want to hear anything and everything — I would like to see unique shows with a cappella music, more classical, regional styles of music, or sounds from another country on the air,” she says. “We want more diverse options for listeners — to really reflect BU’s campus.”

WTBU can be heard on www.wtburadio.org, on BU cable television channel six, and in select buildings on campus on either 640 AM or 89.3 FM.
