Lisa Schmid Halpin (DGE’69, Questrom’71) of Buffalo Grove, Ill., writes, “Back in 2014, I read an article in the  Chicago Tribune about a new online ‘school’ started by Harvard and MIT (www.edx.org), which offered free courses. In the article they mentioned several of the courses, including one about baseball analytics offered by BU. I’m a big baseball fan, and I spend most of my summers in Las Vegas, so I thought if I take this course in sabermetrics it might give me the tools I need to bet baseball. Well, my husband said I wasn’t the favorite to finish the course, much less pass, but I did both. Keep in mind that sabermetrics was not developed for the sports better, but I decided to use WAR (wins above replacement) as the foundation for my analysis—for the last three years, I’ve won. So, thank you to lecturer Andy Andres for making learning fun and profitable.”
