Nicola Jane Buttigieg

Nicola Jane Buttigieg (CFA’10) of London, England, created Beatbox Code Notation, a beatbox code loop builder that was born from her investigation of the tempo control of electronic music additions during live performance, with a focus on modern theater-based music composition. The program “uses a library of text and punctuation-based characters to represent articulations of the mouth and voice” and “aspire[s] to provide a means for beatbox artists to detail electronic music imitation patterns more accurately, and in sync with traditional music notation on a printed, standard music notation score.” Nicola composes for film and theater and produces fully orchestrated hard copy scores and piano reductions for live theater and synchronized cinema orchestra, as well as digital soundtracks for film and audio media. She teaches computer science and is completing postgraduate study at the University of Hertfordshire.
