Boston University Wind Ensemble album produced by Summit Records includes original pieces from composers <\/em>Richard Cornell, Rodney Lister, Ketty Nez, and John H. Wallace.<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Boston University College of Fine Arts (CFA) School of Music<\/a><\/span> is proud to announce the release of Expanding Spaces: Music by Boston University Composers<\/em>, produced by Summit Records. Conducted by David J. Martins<\/a><\/span>, director of theBoston University Wind Ensemble, the album features the Wind Ensemble performing original works by composers who are on faculty at BU CFA School of Music.<\/p>\r\n

Considered the preeminent source for high level wind ensemble and wind performance recordings, Summit Records recorded Expanding Spaces<\/em><\/span> at WGBH\u2019s Fraser Performance Studio in Boston. The album officially releases on February 22, 2019 and features cover art by Deborah Cornell<\/a><\/span>, College of Fine Arts associate professor of art.<\/p>\r\n

The unique process of recording the CD brought together three premieres of original work by BU composers who wrote the pieces for the BU Wind Ensemble. Conductor David Martins was thrilled to showcase the quality and professionalism of the School of Music’s exceptional wind program and help put the student musicians and faculty composers and conductors on the map. After the multi-year project which featured many student musicians, Martins reflected: “I’m extremely proud of these students – their performing capabilities, and just who they are as humans.” According to Martins, students were thrilled to be a part of the process of the recording endeavor. “They realized how valuable of an educational and professional experience this was.”<\/p>\r\n

Expanding Spaces<\/em> is a collaborative project between the Boston University Wind Ensemble and four Boston University faculty composers to perform and record contemporary works related to the theme of expanding space. Three of these works, \u201cSquares and Oblongs\u201d by Rodney Lister<\/a><\/span>, \u201cfour scenes for Juliet\u201d by Ketty Nez<\/a><\/span>, and \u201cThe Vacant Shore\u201d by John Wallace<\/a><\/span> were commissioned for this project. The fourth work, \u201cSolar Prominences\u201d by Richard Cornell<\/a><\/span>, was commissioned for the Concord (Massachusetts) Band in 1988 for their 25th<\/sup> anniversary season.<\/p>\r\n

Under the visionary leadership of Professor David Martins, the ensemble regularly performs standard repertoire from a span of over four centuries as well as modern works and premieres. In 2014, they premiered the wind ensemble transcription of John Williams\u2019s Tuba Concerto with Mike Roylance, principal tuba of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, the ensemble performed the US premiere of Gregory Fritze\u2019s Bass Trombone Concerto with Gabriel Langfur, bass trombonist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic and Vermont Symphony Orchestras. This is the ensemble\u2019s third full-length album: in 2013 they released a recording of Ketty Nez\u2019s Piano Concerto entitled \u201cthresholds\u201d, and in 2015, an album of trumpet concerti with world-renowned soloist Terry Everson.<\/p>\r\n
