The pieces explored such themes as identity, race, the experience of diaspora, and the impact of technology.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the works was New Jersey\u2013based artist\u00a0Amy Sherald\u2019s\u00a0oil painting\u00a0<em>She had an inside and an outside now and suddenly she knew how not to mix them<\/em>\u00a0(2018)\u2014the title a reference to a passage in the Zora Neale Hurston novel\u00a0<em>Their Eyes Were Watching God<\/em>. In it, a woman with a stoic expression, wearing a bright orange cloche hat, teal shirt, and white floral-patterned pants, faces forward. She is set against a plain coral red background and meets the viewers\u2019 gaze. Sherald has given much attention to the woman\u2019s outfit, capturing the seeming heaviness of the large multistrand pearl necklace she\u2019s wearing. The title of the work pairs with this intense focus given to the woman\u2019s appearance\u2014the viewer is privy only to what they see on the \u201coutside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote magazine-block-bu-pullquote alignwide is-style-pop has-secondary-theme has-secondary-theme-text\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">I was avoiding painting people into a corner, where they\u2019d have to exist in some universal way. I don\u2019t want the conversation around my work to be solely about identity.<\/div><footer class=\"caption\">Amy Sherald<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>First Lady Michelle Obama selected Sherald to paint her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/npg.si.edu\/Michelle_Obama\">official White House portrait<\/a>. The painter is also known for her striking&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/culture\/2020\/08\/amy-sherald-on-making-breonna-taylors-cover-portrait\">portrait of Breonna Taylor<\/a>, a 26-year-old Black woman fatally shot by white police officers at her home in Louisville, Ky., in 2020. The image was featured on the cover of the September 2020 issue of&nbsp;<em>Vanity Fair<\/em>. Sherald renders all of her subjects in grisaille\u2014a grayish monochrome\u2014often set against solid color backgrounds, like the painting that was in the Stone Gallery show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe story of why I paint my figures gray has evolved over the years. I\u2019m not trying to take race out of the conversation, I\u2019m just trying to highlight an interiority,\u201d she said in a conversation with fellow artist Tyler Mitchell for&nbsp;<em>Art in America&nbsp;<\/em>in 2021. \u201cIn hindsight, I realize that I was avoiding painting people into a corner, where they\u2019d have to exist in some universal way. Bill Gautreaux says that collecting these works has been part of \u201ca journey of learning and awareness that has been life altering.\u201d&nbsp;The show featured artists from all over the world and many different cultural heritages, among them&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamescohan.com\/artists\/elias-sime\">Elias Sime<\/a>, an Ethiopian artist based in Addis Ababa, and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/vibhagalhotra.com\/\">Vibha Galhotra<\/a>, an Indian artist who lives and works in New Delhi.
