For Drew Demeterio (CFA\u201924), an undergraduate graphic design student at BU School of Visual Arts<\/a>, an internship centered around ice cream<\/em> helped them learn how to apply what they\u2019ve learned in their studio to real-life situations. Drew shares with CFA what it\u2019s like to be a social media and marketing intern for Far Out Ice Cream<\/a>, a New Zealand-style ice cream shop located in Brookline, MA, and how fun and delicious<\/em> the experience has been!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WITH DREW DEMETERIO (CFA’24)<\/h4><\/div>\n

CFA:<\/span> What\u2019s your role in the internship? What are your responsibilities?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Drew:<\/span> I am Far Out Ice Cream<\/a>\u2018s social media and marketing intern! During the course of this internship, I assisted in growing their audience reach through social media, as well as creating and posting videos for their Tik Tok that grew in popularity. I handled engagement with influencers as well as assisted in community engagement projects. I also created graphics using their branding package, done by Rugged Coastal, a design and branding agency. I made designs for their Instagram<\/a>, posters to be put up around town, flyers, and coupon designs to be handed out to guests.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> How did you find out about the internship?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Drew:<\/span> I learned about the internship by word of mouth from a fellow BU student and contacted Far Out directly via email expressing my interest in the position. From there, I had to send in my portfolio as well as examples of what I could bring to the table as a social media and marketing intern such as examples of feed organization, graphics, and ideas for marketing their product.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> Any notable accomplishments from the internship?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Drew:<\/span> My favorite project was working on a guerrilla marketing campaign, and making a mural of flyers to get the product out there and talked about, which resulted in more customers learning about the brand! I helped with social campaigns, and employed my graphic design knowledge in figuring out exactly what looks good and appealing to consumers, and what does not!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> How does the coursework at CFA connect with your internship?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Drew:<\/span> I feel as though my graphic design major\/degree<\/a> allowed me to be able to feel ready for the workload of my internship and what I was expected to do. I was able to make graphics in an efficient and timely manner, feeling confident in typography and design and having to work with a cohesive brand that was already set for me. I really utilized what I learned in my studio in keeping a certain tone in my designs, for this internship I kept the tone friendly and inviting! Needing to make appealing graphics is important in this internship, and having to make them captivating and approachable is one way to get customers into the store.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> In what ways do you think the internship has prepared you for your work beyond BU?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Drew:<\/span> Beyond BU, I am interested in working with branding\/packaging. Having to work with a branding package done by an actual design and branding agency allowed me to look forward to the future, and it was also amazing to be actively working with Far Out\u2019s marketing team, participating in weekly meetings all centered around visual creativity and discussing the best ways things should look, and I look forward to keeping that professional, creative mindset in my future.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> What did you learn about yourself?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Drew:<\/span> I learned that I love to have fun and want my artistic practice to remain fun for me. I also learned what I\u2019m capable of, in ways and places I did not think about before. I did not think I could learn and apply so much about graphic design to a job centered around ice cream! But that kept it fun (and delicious)<\/em> for me! I also definitely learned how to apply what I learn in my studio to real-life situations!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> Any advice for current CFA students beginning the internship process?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Drew:<\/span> My advice for current CFA students beginning the internship process is to put yourself out there and to keep your mind open to opportunities you may not have previously considered! You\u2019ll never know what you\u2019ll find and learn in the most unconventional places, and you\u2019ll never know the things you can accomplish if you don\u2019t try at first! For me, I never thought I\u2019d learn a lot about art and design surrounded by ice cream and waffle cones!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFA:<\/span> What\u2019s next for you?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Drew:<\/span> Immediately next for me is my study abroad in Venice, Italy, with the Studio Arts program<\/a>. After, when I\u2019m back I\u2019ll be in search of the next thing that life brings my way!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n
