Every day, a fresh&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/sylvia\/about\">Sylvia<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;strip would spill from her pen, the eponymous central character providing sharp\u2014often biting\u2014commentary on political and social issues. Sylvia, said&nbsp;<em>Ms. Magazine<\/em>&nbsp;in 2010, was a \u201cfeminist heroine for the ages.\u201d<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And then in 2012,&nbsp;<em>Sylvia<\/em>&nbsp;was retired and Hollander (\u201966) found herself staring at a blank sheet of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freed from the pressure of daily output, Hollander took up a two-week residency at Ragdale, a nonprofit artists\u2019 community on the edge of a 50-acre prairie in Lake Forest, Ill. She arrived with \u201chuge rolls of really beautiful, heavy, white paper\u201d and some charcoal\u2014and little idea of what to do with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She stapled the paper to the wall of her temporary studio\u2014a room with an old radio and expansive, pastoral view\u2014and stepped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo have a huge space, to be looking out at another huge space, that freed me up to think about the past,\u201d says Hollander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote magazine-block-bu-pullquote alignwide is-style-modern has-image has-image-focus-center-middle has-quaternary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"576\" class=\"bu-blocks-background has-background-opacity has-background-opacity-60 wp-image-97329\" src=\"\/cfa\/files\/2023\/01\/Muse-NicoleHollander.jpeg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/cfa\/files\/2023\/01\/Muse-NicoleHollander.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/cfa\/files\/2023\/01\/Muse-NicoleHollander-636x407.jpeg 636w, https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/cfa\/files\/2023\/01\/Muse-NicoleHollander-768x492.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">To have a huge space, to be looking out at another huge space, that freed me up to think about the past.<\/div><footer class=\"caption\"><br\/>Nicole Hollander<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>She started drawing a sliver of her childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a kid, Hollander lived in an apartment building in Chicago\u2019s West Garfield Park, then not one of the city\u2019s best neighborhoods, now one of its most dangerous.
