In 1943,<\/strong> Austrian violinist Alma Ros\u00e9<\/a> was taken to the Auschwitz<\/a> concentration camp, where she was made conductor of the women\u2019s orchestra<\/a> that performed for prisoners and officers. She died of illness in Auschwitz in 1944 and is remembered for bringing her fellow prisoners and musicians a spiritual escape amidst the horrors of the Holocaust.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

A decade earlier, Ros\u00e9 had been an international star. The niece of composer Gustav Mahler<\/a> and daughter of a celebrated concertmaster, Ros\u00e9 was the founder of the all-women Wiener Walzerm\u00e4deln (The Viennese Waltzing Girls), a salon orchestra that toured internationally to great success until the Nazis took control of Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When reading a book about the Women\u2019s Orchestra of Auschwitz, Bramwell Tovey, an associate professor of music and director of orchestral activities, was struck by a photograph of Ros\u00e9 (center) with Wiener Walzerm\u00e4deln in a 1930 concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tovey says the photograph, showing \u201cthe fullness of life, which we know was destroyed afterwards, and its sense of loss,\u201d has become \u201can emblematic impetus\u201d for a violin concerto he\u2019s composing for the National Arts Centre Orchestra<\/a> in Ottawa, Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m also writing this piece exactly 50 years after the death of my father, who died when I was 15. That particular sense of loss is helping me to realize what I\u2019m trying to express, a narrative that can take the listener to different levels,\u201d says Tovey, also an award-winning jazz pianist and conductor. \u201cThe German philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer<\/a>, said that music takes over where words cease function.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
