Utilizing the newest technologies, BU’s MFA in technical production offers students the opportunity to become proficient in areas such as automation, CNC, 3D printing, and AutoCAD. Courses in welding, drafting, rigging, and production are combined with design, art, and management classes to create well-rounded and insightful technicians.  Graduates of the program have gone on to work in the highest levels of the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

60% hands on, 40% classroom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As an MFA technical production student, you’ll learn how to effectively manage large crews, organize large-scale projects, and delegate to those that’ll help the show succeed. Tactile skills you’ll gain include carpentry, welding, rigging, AutoCAD, automation, scenic engineering, and spreadsheet organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, and there’s no rubber stamp mold of a BU graduate theater student. Interested in learning about lighting, audio production, production management, and other areas of theatre? You can take classes in that! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program of Study<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Training includes a rigorous curriculum, production opportunities, and collaboration with theatre professionals. This program offers a mix of the hands-on production approach to go along with the classroom theoretical approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The small student-to-teacher ratio (6:1) gives each student faculty mentorship on a daily basis.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state-of-the-art facility, CFA Production Center<\/a>, ensures that all students are getting opportunities to work with the latest technologies and graduate with applicable skills to the modern theatre world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Feature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Get to know Jerry Zuraw (CFA’21), who had been working as the assistant technical director of a regional theatre company and came to BU to advance his career with an MFA in technical production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRather than continuing to try and piece that education together on the job, I determined that pursuing an MFA at Boston University was the best long-term investment I could make in myself and the most efficient way for me to gain the tools I need to meet my career goals,” says Jerry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry was drawn to BU because of the opportunity to design in the award-winning and state-of-the-art venue, Booth Theatre. “I wanted to get hands-on experience working with the same automation systems that are used in large-scale, professional shows.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the program’s curriculum, Jerry was able to take classes in lighting, sound, and production management. \u201cThis well-rounded education has helped me build a vocabulary that has allowed me to better communicate with my collaborators.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
