And, we recognize the significant barriers that some students face because of their race, gender, economic status, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and other seen and unseen marginalized identities. Through partnerships, mentorship, scholarship, and relationships, BU Tanglewood Institute empowers young musicians and their educators to dream big and realize those dreams. Through its Partners the Network provides access to rigorous instrumental and vocal instruction for a racially, culturally, and economically diverse student population, develops their talent, and facilitates their advancement to becoming professional musicians.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Core Values<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Training excellence<\/li>\n<li>Internal and external collaboration<\/li>\n<li>An enabling community for a racially, culturally, and economically diverse student population<\/li>\n<li>Respect for students, teachers, and partner organizations<\/li>\n<li>Advocacy for students<\/li>\n<li>Integrity in training and operations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/cfa\/tanglewood\/community-partners\/\">Meet the Partners<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" id=\"green\" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Support for DEIB<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<h5>International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians (ICSOM)<\/h5>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/cfa\/tanglewood\">Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI)<\/a>, a premier summer training program for talented young musicians ages 14 to 20, will begin offering a scholarship funded by the<span><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icsom.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians (ICSOM)<\/a>. Starting in 2023 and running through 2027, the ICSOM BU Tanglewood Institute Scholarship will provide support for Underrepresented Musicians with significant financial need who would benefit from the immersive summer music program at BUTI, fulfilling an important need to smooth the pathway of pre-professional musicians who are from such underrepresented groups.<\/p>\n<p><span>Over the course of the agreement, ICSOM will provide $50,000 to BUTI, who will award one Underrepresented Musician applying to the BUTI Young Artists Orchestra each season $10,000, an amount covering the full cost of attendance to BUTI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/cfa\/news\/articles\/2023\/international-conference-of-symphony-and-opera-musicians-and-boston-university-tanglewood-institute-announce-new-scholarship-for-underrepresented-musicians\/\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Young Artists Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Fund<\/h5>\n<p>For the express purpose of increasing representation on the stages of BUTI, the Young Artists Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Fund is supported by the generosity of Richard and Carol Seltzer, Marian Godfrey, and other patrons who are committed to this work. The fund supports student scholarship, recruitment activities, opportunities for students in the Ann Hobson Pilot Partner Network, and Community Engagement &amp; Inclusion programming.<\/p>\n<p><span>The Young Artists Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Fund awards three full scholarships each season, covering the full cost of attendance to BUTI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/trusted.bu.edu\/s\/1759\/2-bu\/giving\/interior.aspx?sid=1759&amp;gid=2&amp;pgid=519&amp;cid=1204&amp;appealcode=WEBAGC-TI\">Contribute to the Fund<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" id=\"green\" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Community Engagement and Inclusion<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The BUTI Community Engagement (CE) and Inclusion Program is designed to use music as a tool to bring communities together and share the love of music with all. CE Programs include community concerts with local partner organizations, educational events with the Tanglewood Learning Institute and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and miscellaneous activities with partner organizations. BUTI staff and faculty mentor students in presentation skills and equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary to present in an authentic and engaging manner. The program also <span>ensures that the culture of our organization, both internally and externally, is one that is inclusive, graceful, and empathetic<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The BUTI Community Engagement and Inclusion Program includes events like:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Non-traditional performance opportunities of live, classical music throughout the Berkshires<\/li>\n<li>Development of students&#8217; personal and professional growth<\/li>\n<li>Workshops about field-relevant topics (e.g. Historically Underrepresented Composers, new works, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Affinity and Allyship Meetings<\/li>\n<li>Guest artists and speakers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"callouts has-1\">\n<div class=\"callout pink\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h4>What are we doing?<\/h4>\n<p>We recognize that Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging work spans the life of an organization and transcends administrations. As we build these values into BUTI at the structural and foundational level, we know that we&#8217;ll get it wrong sometimes, that the targets will change, and that growth begets growth. We aim to find a balance between having the patience to make change at a pace that is sustainable and lasts into the future and having the impatience to continually be moving the needle forward. Here are some of the things that are on our minds right now through this process:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Philosophy, Procedure, Policy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explore how an application can capture the full and unique spectrum of each applicant\u2019s growth potential and reinforce a curriculum that centers the practice of excellence. How do we empower students of today to continuously learn from one another as they become the leaders of tomorrow?<\/li>\n<li>Create a communications, training, and support plan specifically for faculty and program directors that expresses the BUTI values and mission. Invite all members of the team uphold these core beliefs.<\/li>\n<li>Clarify, define, and refine polices that refer to discriminatory, othering, or hateful speech and behaviors. Create methods of reporting experienced or witnessed hateful aggressions. Provide opportunities for students to learn and grow in their understanding and inclusivity while building flexibility in disciplinary action that centers a victim\u2019s needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Programming<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Program repertoire that is more representative of our world at large, and integrate these diverse offerings throughout the program.<\/li>\n<li>Diversify the audition repertoire requirements, giving students and their teachers the opportunity to study works and composers in an authentic way, regardless of whether they attend BUTI.<\/li>\n<li>Center place making and allyship as part of Student Life; offering the opportunity to learn about folks from different backgrounds with shared values.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Staff and Faculty<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When hiring for open faculty positions, look at the process through the lens of an opportunity to build diversity into our leadership.<\/li>\n<li>When hiring for open staff positions, look at the process through the lens of an opportunity to build diversity into our leadership.<\/li>\n<li>Invite a more representative contingent of musicians to join BUTI as masterclass guests.<\/li>\n<li>Bring on a mental health counselor or social worker. Create a dedicated Community &amp; Inclusion staff position. This person would:\n<ul>\n<li>Partner with Manager of Education and Programming and Manager of Enrollment and Student Engagement in onboarding process for students and families from partner organizations.<\/li>\n<li>Be involved in pre-season managerial training.<\/li>\n<li>Lead dedicated DEI training module(s) for all summer staff.<\/li>\n<li>Oversee and manage the coordination and leadership of safe space and\/or allyship groups.<\/li>\n<li>Be a resource for students and staff who may have questions\/concerns about othering behaviors. Be an on-the-ground thought partner for implementation of DEI initiatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We welcome feedback and ideas about how we can grow, improve, and sustain our work long into the future.
