Founded in 1978, Alea III is the third such group organized by Music Director Theodore Antoniou. The ensemble is consistent with the music it embraces\u2014flexible in size, open to experiment and to exploration. Over the years, Alea III has offered world-premiere opportunities for dozens of contemporary composers, often under the composer\u2019s direction, and with extended program notes or comments. The group has performed more than 1,420 works by 810 composers\u2014most of them living. Frequent international touring has enhanced the relationships of American performers with their colleagues and composers from other parts of the world. With its inspiration, several other contemporary groups have been formed, offering growing opportunity to young composers and musicians to play and comprehend contemporary music.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"button\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aleaiii.com\/\">Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Greek word <em>alea<\/em> taken from Homer, means \u201cto wander.\u201d In Latin, it refers to \u201ca die or dice used for playing at games of chance.\u201d The term aleatoric music indicates music based upon the principles of indeterminacy as evidenced by certain random and\/or statistical procedures of composition. In regard to the ensemble, aleatoric is concerned with the expression of a multiplicity of musical directions, historical styles, and performance practices.<\/p>\n<h3>Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO)<\/h3>\n<p>Widely regarded as one of the country\u2019s finest youth orchestra programs, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) is recognized as a model organization in music and arts education. BYSO serves nearly 500 students from more than 120 communities throughout New England. Since 1958, BYSO has been in residence at Boston University.<\/p>\n<p>The mission of BYSO is to encourage musical excellence in a professional and supportive environment by providing the highest quality orchestra training and performance opportunities to qualified musicians, grades K\u201312, and making its programs accessible to underserved communities through financial assistance and outreach.<\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of Music Director Federico Cortese, BYSO has become one of Boston\u2019s most prestigious arts organizations with a programmatic scope that includes three full symphonic orchestras, six chamber orchestras, two string training orchestras, a preparatory wind ensemble, a chamber music program, and the Intensive Community Program, a nationally recognized string training program for underrepresented communities.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"button\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bysoweb.org\/\">Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Muir String Quartet<\/h3>\n<p>For over three decades, the Muir String Quartet has long been acknowledged as one of the world\u2019s most powerful and insightful ensembles, distinguishing itself among audiences and critics with its \u201cexhilarating involvement\u201d (<em>Boston Globe<\/em>), \u201cimpeccable voicing and intonation\u201d (<em>San Francisco Examiner<\/em>), and \u201cunbridled musicality\u201d (<em>American Record Guide<\/em>). The Muir Quartet has been in residence at Boston University\u2019s College of Fine Arts since 1983, and gives annual summer workshops at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI). The Muir Quartet has also given master classes at schools worldwide, including the Eastman School of Music, the Curtis Institute, Oberlin Conservatory, the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and conservatories in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xian, China. Since 1989, the quartet has presented the Emerging Quartets and Composers Program in Utah with eminent composer Joan Tower. The quartet was also featured on the internationally acclaimed PBS broadcast<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>In Performance at the White House for President and Mrs. Reagan<\/em>. Formed in 1979 following graduation from the Curtis Institute of Music, the Muir String Quartet\u2019s principal chamber music teachers were Felix Galimir and members of the Guarneri and Budapeset Quartets.<\/p>\n<p>In its commitment to advancing contemporary American music, the Muir Quartet has had commissioned works written for them by such distinguished composers as Joan Tower (<em>Night Fields<\/em>), Sheila Silver (<em>From Darkness Emerging<\/em>), Richard Danielpour (<em>Shadow Dances<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Psalms of Sorrow<\/em>\u2014featured on<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>CBS Sunday Morning<\/em>), Richard Wilson (Third String Quartet), and Charles Fussell (Being Music\u2014based on poetry of Walt Whitman). The quartet also gave the World Premiere performance of the Native American collaborative work, Circle of Faith, featured on National Public Radio. Recently premiered works include those by esteemed American composers Richard Danielpour (<em>Feast of Fools<\/em>\u2014for bassoon and string quartet), Lukas Foss (<em>String Quartet #4<\/em>), Ezra Laderman (<em>String Quartets #9<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>#10<\/em>), and Joelle Wallach (<em>String Quartet #3<\/em>), and Ronald Perera\u2019s first Quartet.
