Public schools were closed to in-person learning through the 2019-2020 school year and well into 2020-2021\u2014with some districts, including Boston, remaining remote until April 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The true toll of COVID-19 on teachers and students may not be known for many years, but we can glean some initial insights from two BU Wheelock studies about Massachusetts school life in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How the Pandemic Affected Students <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ceresinstitute.org\/i-miss-the-sound-of-our-bells\/\">I Miss the Sound of Our Bells<\/a>,\u201d based on a qualitative study conducted by researchers from BU\u2019s CERES Institute for Children and Youth\u2014including Associate Professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/profile\/yasuko-kanno\/\">Yasuko Kanno<\/a>, Research Professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/profile\/jonathan-f-zaff\/\">Jonathan Zaff<\/a>, and three students\u2014sought to capture the lived experiences of high school students as they navigated a drastically altered world during the 2020\u20132021 school year. Researchers interviewed 62 young people in Massachusetts\u2014ages 15 to 20 and mostly students of color\u2014between<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/iStock-1388116518-Converted_black_colorized-scaled-e1665635093964-393x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62274\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>July and September 2021. The resulting report provides frequently troubling insights into adolescents\u2019 experiences with remote learning during the darkest days of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote magazine-block-bu-pullquote is-style-modern has-image-focus-center-middle has-tertiary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">Honestly, I miss the sound of\u00a0 our bells, like, telling us to go to\u00a0class, even though I hated it when I was there. I would do anything to have it back again<\/div><footer class=\"caption\">Lisa, 10th grade<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Two in three students struggled with remote learning.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/Screen-Shot-2022-10-13-at-12.29.10-AM-517x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62279\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote magazine-block-bu-pullquote is-style-modern has-image-focus-center-middle has-quaternary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">I went from being, like, a straight-A student to, like, getting mostly, like, Cs and Bs, um, sometimes even, like, Fs.<\/div><footer class=\"caption\">Santiago, 9th grade<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Many took on extra responsibilities, like paid work or caregiving at home.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/iStock-1213761912-Converted_black_colorized-1-551x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62293\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote magazine-block-bu-pullquote is-style-modern has-image-focus-center-middle has-tertiary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">\u2026I had to take care of my younger siblings here, and sometimes it interfered with my classes.<\/div><footer class=\"caption\">Kaity, 10th grade<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>They struggled with their mental health.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Changes at school and home wrought by COVID-19, along with heightened attention to race-based violence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/Girl-with-head-in-hands-460x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62299\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>and calls for racial justice beginning in summer 2020, led to widespread mental health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote magazine-block-bu-pullquote is-style-modern has-image-focus-center-middle has-tertiary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">I literally could not get out of bed in the morning because of depression, and the anxiety hit and hit hard<\/div><footer class=\"caption\">Jamie, 11th grade<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Students\u2019 networks of support shifted.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some friendships deepened, and most students had at least one adult they could turn to for help. However, few young people reported organized support systems or programs that could connect them with needed resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/Screen-Shot-2022-10-13-at-10.32.51-AM-534x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62303\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Illness and death surrounded them.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Young people became acutely aware of illness and death, either because of close contact with COVID in their households or because family members worked in jobs that students worried would place their health at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>They were resilient.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/iStock-1223496654-Converted_black_colorized-1-537x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62305\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Young people met pandemic-related challenges with resilience, increased self-awareness, and a new appreciation for what \u201cnormal\u201d life looked like.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote magazine-block-bu-pullquote is-style-modern has-image-focus-center-middle has-quaternary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">You have to know how much you can do, and just know when to ask for help as well.<\/div><footer class=\"caption\">Rain, 11th grade<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>They were conflicted about returning to in-person learning.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though students craved the connection of going back to school in person, they also worried about whether returning to the classroom would be safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/Screen-Shot-2022-10-13-at-10.46.17-AM-499x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62309\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote magazine-block-bu-pullquote is-style-modern has-image-focus-center-middle has-tertiary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">What I\u2019m worried about is building that basically has no ventilation.<\/div><footer class=\"caption\">AK, 11th grade<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>How the Pandemic Affected the Teacher Workforce<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Professors&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/profile\/olivia-chi\/\">Olivia Chi<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/profile\/andrew-bacher-hicks\/\">Andrew Bacher-Hicks<\/a>, along with postdoctoral fellow Alexis Orellana, authored \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wheelockpolicycenter.org\/effective-teachers\/covid-19-and-ma-teacher-workforce\/\">COVID-19 and the Composition of the Massachusetts Teacher Workforce<\/a>,\u201d which explores whether the challenges of the pandemic led to a rise in teachers leaving public education. After analyzing data from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, they found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/iStock-1326421079-Converted_black_colorized-519x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62314\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OVERALL TURNOVER<\/strong>\u2014which included teachers transferring within and between districts, as well as leaving teaching in Massachusetts\u2014 remained stable in fall 2020, six months into the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/iStock-1349344439-Converted_black_colorized-198x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62316\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1><strong>17%&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>more teachers left their school by 2021\u201418 months into the pandemic\u2014compared to the prepandemic rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1>&nbsp;<strong>31%<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>increase in turnover among newly hired teachers compared to prepandemic levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/iStock-1360513609-Converted_black_colorized-650x151.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62319\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Teaching workforce diversity increased in Massachusetts during the pandemic<\/strong>.&nbsp;14% of newly hired teachers were Black or Hispanic, a larger share than in prior years.&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>INCREASES IN TURNOVER WERE LARGER FOR WHITE TEACHERS<\/strong>&nbsp;THAN FOR BLACK OR HISPANIC TEACHERS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/id-andrea.cms-devl.bu.edu\/wheelock\/files\/2022\/10\/Screen-Shot-2022-10-13-at-1.08.48-PM-e1665681007213-414x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62361\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2019\u20132020 and 2021\u20132022, the share of all teachers who are teachers of color increased by just 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote magazine-block-bu-pullquote is-style-modern has-image-focus-center-middle has-tertiary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">The initial fears about a mass exodus of teachers didn\u2019t come true.
