New eateries join the constellation along Comm Ave

Food scenes never stay static, and this year proves the point. On and around campus there are several new alternatives, all geared toward student appetites: sandwiches, Mexican fare, pizza, pita. There have been some facelifts too, from The Towers dining hall (a new ceiling) to the BU Pub (a newly renovated scene for those over 21).
Student response has been positive, with long lines this week for Mexican food at Olecito’s (in Warren Towers) and brisk business at the new Upper Crust and Panera (which are side by side on Comm Ave). Casual comment confirms upbeat reviews: Amanda Britton (CFA’13) says she loves the new Extreme Pita in Claflin Hall (especially the chicken souvlaki). Her friend Layne Kula (CFA’13) adds a suggestion: someplace for shrimp?
Here’s a rundown of the new school year’s new faces:
Olecito, in Warren Towers, 700 Commonwealth Ave.
Serves tacos, quesadillas, tortas (Mexican-style sandwiches served on telera bread), and burritos.
Upper Crust Pizzeria, 888 Commonwealth Ave.
This gourmet thin-crust pizzeria is gaining popularity all over Boston. Try the Newbury, a veal Parmesan pizza, or the white clam pizza. Bonus: beer and wine for the 21+ crowd.
Panera Bread, 888 Commonwealth Ave.
Sandwiches, salads, soups, and bakery items. It also has free Wi-Fi.
Extreme Pita, Claflin Hall lobby, 273 Babcock St.
It all starts with the pita — white or whole wheat — and you can add chicken, steak, or falafel. Then come a variety of veggies, cheeses, and dressings. Flat bread pitas and salads are also available.
Buick Street Market and Café, 10 Buick St.
Like the GSU, the Buick Street Market has a Charles River Bread Company and Loose Leafs, as well as a small food store and a Dunkin’ Donuts.
The BU Pub, in the Castle, 225 Bay State Rd.
The bar has been gutted and improved, with a new beer tower and draft system, plus a spruced up patio out back. A new grill is on the way. Open only to the BU community and guests, 21 and older.
There’s one more addition, still under way. Raising Cane’s, 949 Commonwealth Ave., a chicken finger place, is stepping into the former McDonalds, near Agganis Arena.
