  1. Dr. Bacevich,

Having read some of your work, I am reminded of your writing on the All Volunteer Army.

To me, the AVF represents the ultimate absence of moral purpose in America’s foreign policy adventures. If such evils exist in the world, should it not be the duty of every American Citizen to fight against them?

Worse, the absence of this national duty extends to the ranks of the military as well. The ranks of our Army are full of true patriots, but there are also a great many who join out of desperation, or even the selfish desire to obtain moral superiority over the very citizens and constitution they swear to defend.

If America has a moral responsibility to project power throughout the world, then every citizen must do their part.
